Aliza Ashkenazi is a multidisciplinary artist. In this exhibition, Aliza chose to focus on women in the ongoing protest. Seeing women waving flags and signs, shouting their cry from behind face masks, led her to reflect on the depiction of women throughout art history.
Aliza chose to make these women present through various mediums. She painted them on burlap sacks—a material evoking the traditional wearing of sackcloth, as practiced in rituals to avert dire decrees and plead for redemption. These rapid line drawings of women on the sacks evolved into digital paintings, allowing Aliza to delve into detailed portraiture and infuse the figures with a romantic touch.
Additionally, throughout the lockdown days, Aliza responded to surrounding events through ink drawings, which she then embroidered and joined with sewing thread. The figure of the seamstress echoes from her childhood, recalling her mother’s sewing machine as the soundtrack accompanying those days.
Looking at this wall, I am deeply moved by our human attempt to stitch together dreams, thoughts, and emotions, and to mend the tears created in our lives. The wall presents a vision where everything is so vibrant and real, yet delicate and frayed all at once. Indeed, double meanings are found in many of Aliza’s works, where the home and hands serve as recurring motifs.
You are invited to find the connecting thread between these works and yourselves.
